Finding Life's Joy

I grew up in a working-class family of five which taught me two very important qualities: hard work AND loving life. I’ve carried these qualities with me throughout my life and share them with my family now. No matter what we are doing, whether it be hosting a cookout, attending an art exhibit, volunteering, or traveling, the importance is placed on enjoying the moment I am in and giving all of myself to it. This is the same mentality that I bring to my professional career. Clients will know that I am giving all of myself to their case as I guide them through their legal challenges. It is my hope for every client to be able to enjoy their life once their matter has concluded.

Matthew was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and attended college at New Mexico State University where he double-majored in Government and Criminal Justice, with a supplemental major in Law and Society. After graduating from NMSU in 2011, Matthew attended the University of New Mexico School of Law and obtained his Juris Doctor Degree in 2015. As a law student, Matthew served his class as a member of the Graduate and Professional Student Association Legislative Council. He also led organizations such as the UNM Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. Matthew served low-income clients through UNM’s Community Lawyering clinic and represented wrongfully convicted men and women as part of New Mexico’s Innocence and Justice Project.

Matthew was admitted to the State Bar of New Mexico in 2015 and joined the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted criminal cases involving domestic violence, DWI, and property crime. In addition to representing the State in the Mental Health Court program, he also served as the DA’s Office HEART prosecutor focusing on repeat domestic violence offenders. After leaving the DA’s Office Matthew went on to practice in the areas of insurance defense, governmental representation, civil rights defense, and commercial representation close to home in Las Cruces, NM. In 2017, Matthew was admitted to the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico. After returning to the Albuquerque, NM area Matthew worked for local law firms representing individuals and small businesses in the areas of personal injury, contracts, insurance, and construction.

Matthew now practices in the area of divorce and family law, and contested probate/estate matters. He represents clients in a wide range of cases, from simple, mediated divorces to complex cases involving high-conflict custody and financial issues to contested wills, trusts, and inheritance-related claims. Matthew’s diverse experience has allowed him to hone his skills in negotiation, trial practice, and advocacy. In addition, Matthew has extensive experience working with his fellow attorneys and judges all over the state. Matthew prides himself on using his skills and experience to achieve positive results for his clients.
